programs need to be loaded into a regular windows session.
If you think your computer is having
problems with a driver, you can load into xp safe mode and delete
the driver.

and only try one thing at a time and then reboot. Trying too
many things at once will not allow you to correctly single out
any problems the computer is having.
If windows system files do become corrupt
then safe mode may not help at all. You may need to use the
recovery console in windows.
How to get into windows XP safe mode.
Restart your computer and then wait. Once
the computer reboots you will need to hit the F8 key before
windows loads. If you fail to do so, then you will need to
restart and try again.
Once xp safe mode loads correctly then a menu
will appear. These are:
- Safe mode
- Safe mode with networking
- Safe mode with command prompt
- Enable VGA mode
- Last know good configuration
- Directory service restore mode
- Debugging mode
- Enable boot logging
- Start windows normally
- Reboot
If you need access to your internet
connection then you will want to choose the xp safe mode with
networking option. Otherwise the first safe mode option will be
just fine.
As you can see from the above list, you can
also load the last known good configuration of windows. This is
also good to try if you are just starting to have problems.
XP safe mode is really good to help you
figure out problems with software, drivers and some hardware, and
can be a life saver for your data.
