When there is a problem the windows
security center will also give recommendations about what you
can do to resolve the problem. This does come in handy because
sometimes anti virus software can become disabled for various
reasons.
The three main things of the windows security
center are:
- Firewall
- Automatic updates
- Virus protection
If you have your windows firewall turned on
or another firewall installed this will show a green light with
on.
Even if you have a router for your home
network, the windows firewall is good to have turned on at the
computer level.
Next are automatic updates. Again, if
turned on there will also be a green light with the word on.
Automatic updates for windows are important. You should set
windows to receive and look for them everyday.
Last but not least is virus protection. If
your computer is properly protected with good anti virus
software this will again show a green light.
If you cannot afford anti virus software,
you can run a free online scanner.
If you do have a firewall and anti virus
software installed but the security center shows you have
nothing installed, check the Microsoft website.
This can be common with certain software.
Sometimes windows will not recognize certain software vendors.
If you know the software is installed correctly, don’t be
alarmed.
If you want to stop some alerts from the
windows security center because
windows cannot read your software then over on the left hand
side at the very bottom choose, change the way security center
alerts me.
You can then uncheck anyone of the three
major windows security center options.
The last thing on the windows security
center list, you can
control is your internet options. Doing this gives
you the ability to control options for internet explorer.
You can control the security and privacy of
how you connect through your browser.
All in all, the Windows security center is a nice little tool
for Windows XP and should be checked once in a while for optimum
performance and security.
