A startup up disk is not the end all and be
all of windows 98 repair. But it is a good thing to have. You
will need a blank 1.44 MB floppy to create one.
So let’s create one now!
- Go to the control panel from the start
menu.
- Now select add/remove programs.
- When the box open click on the startup
disk tab near the top.
- The startup disk displays.
- Select the create disk button and
insert your floppy disk.
- Now windows will create the disk for
you.
- Your session is finished, click close
and store your disk in a safe place.
As you can see it is not that hard to
create a windows startup disk. By doing so you can make sure
you can troubleshoot problems as the happen to perform windows
98 repair.
Scandisk.
Scandisk for windows 98 repair is a helpful little
diagnostic tool you can use to repair problems with your hard
drive.
This is just a common tool to help with
these problems. It is good to run this tool at least once every
other week to help keep windows running free of errors.
- Find the system tools folder from the
accessories folder on the start menu.
- Click on scandisk.
- Now select the drive you want to scan.
- Select either the standard option or
thorough option.
- Make sure you select automatically fix
errors.
- Now click start and wait for it to
finish.
If you want to do a quick check with the
scandisk tool just select the standard option for windows 98
repair.
However if you think you have some errors
on the drive then try and use the thorough option.
This will take a little longer but it may
find the errors on the drive you need to fix. You can also use
the scandisk tool on floppy disks.
Virtual memory settings.
Windows has a little tool that you can set
call the virtual memory settings. With this you can actually
use your hard drive to help speed up some programs in windows.
This actually is a cool little feature of windows 98 repair.
This feature is really a swap file that
windows will use to store information until it needs it. What
this does is allow more to run under less memory.
If you are not sure if this is working
properly and windows is not controlling your settings then you
can try this.
If you decide to mess around with the
settings to see if windows runs better, make sure you record
where the settings were before you changed them.
This way if anything like a slow down
happens then you can go back and set it to the original
settings.

Go to start and click on settings.

Click performance.

Now click the virtual memory button.

Here you can either decide to let windows manage your
settings or make changes as you see fit.

Click ok and restart.
The device manager.
The device manager is where all of your
hardware settings are kept. If you have a problem with a device
you can trouble shoot it here.
Most times the problem is an address
conflict with another device. You will want to go here and see
if there is a conflict with another device if something quits
working such as you mouse.
This is some basic windows 98 repair
operations, but it will get you started in the event of any
problems that you are having.
