A lot of people ask, what is spam? It is most commonly know for junk email you receive in your inbox. However, it can take on other forms such as junk postings in news groups and overly used website advertising.

Spam is used as a very big marketing tool these days.

Sending spam is illegal and there are hefty fines associated with doing so. However, it seems that there is always someone willing to give it a try that’s sold on the idea of spamming.

What happens is, this person will acquire many email addresses for which they will try and send an advertisement. With the help of software they may be able to send out thousands of emails at once.

People who also post advertisements to news groups which do not allow them are considered spam. Most of these news groups are for the willing participants who discuss certain topics.

They do not allow or like when anyone posts an advertisement and consider it spam.

Another reason why someone may ask, what is spam, is by instant messages. If you have am instant message account you may have received a message from someone saying that they talked to you the other night.

They then may ask for your email address. You should never send any information to anyone you do not know through an instant message.

This makes many people ask what is spam and spending a good amount of time cleaning out their inbox.

Tips to protect your self against spam.

If you read the paragraphs above, you can begin to see and understand how spam is spread. The biggest way spam is used is via email. Almost every form of spam comes back to this. If a spammer does not have your email, they will try and get it.

So, the biggest number one rule is to never give out your email address. Never just blindly post or offer your main email address to anyone or thing on the World Wide Web.

If you must give out an email address try and use a second one from a service like hotmail or yahoo. This way if you do get bombarded with spam it will be no big deal.

The second thing to never do is post your email address on the internet. This means any websites, news groups or other places.

This is for a couple if reasons. Once your email address is posted on a website a search engine can pick it up and list it in their index. Once it is listed, it can be found by many would be spammers.

The second is because some people who spam have access to software that allows them to search the web for email addresses. If yours is on the web somewhere then it can once again be found.

Spam is the darkness of the internet. Protecting yourself from it is mostly common sense. If you read the tips above you can lesson the spam in your inbox greatly and won’t leave you asking what is spam.
