Reinstalling windows xp

When reinstalling windows xp there are a few things you will want to consider right from the start.

If you have a home made computer you can most likely install with the windows disk that came with your computer.

If you have a computer made by a manufacturer such as Dell, then you may need to use the windows recovery disk that came with your pc.

Either way if you are not sure, check with whoever made your computer before reinstalling windows xp and you delete your files and lose your data.

Next, you will want to check if you have any files you want to backup.  Once you erase and reformat your hard drive and install windows, your old files will be gone.

So be positive you have any files, pictures or anything else you want to keep before you do anything.

Once all of the above is out of the way, its now time for reinstalling windows xp.  Below is a list for each the home computer and the store bought computer with an outline included.

1.      Have your windows or recovery cd handy.

2.      Change the CD Rom to the first boot device in the system bios.

3.      Restart your computer with the windows disk in the CD Rom.

4.      When asked hit the enter key to install windows.

5.      Follow instructions on the screen.

6.      Format your hard drive.

7.      Follow all on screen prompts and finish installation.

Reinstalling windows xp is not very hard on a newer computer.  It will do most of the work for you.  However if you have an older computer there may be a few additional steps involved.

When formatting your hard drive you will want to use the NTFS long format option and not the quick if you want to keep your data private from other users.  There is more on NTFS a little father down

The quick option can have some problems that may lead to your performing another reinstall.  But, if you are pressed for time you can use the quick.  Just understand that you may experience some problems later on, not necessarily but you may.

For creating more than one partition and the NTFS file system you can read these articles from Microsoft.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314097/

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/119467

Once the reinstalling windows xp process is started it is pretty self explanatory.  However, there are a few steps you will want to make sure go smoothly.

The first one is user accounts and the NTFS file system.

If you will be sharing your computer with others and want to keep your data private then you will want to create additional accounts at this point

If you formatted with the NTFS file system then this will be a snap.  If you do not create other accounts here you can do so later after you install windows.  Just go to the control panel and choose user accounts.

The next thing you want to check for after reinstalling windows xp is to make sure your internet connection will be installed correctly.  XP does a nice job of creating the connection for you.

If you are creating a home network you can make sure file and printer sharing is installed here and save some additional steps later on.

XP does a very nice job of taking care of your installation all you really need to do is be there to make sure a few things are setup correctly.

Outline of reinstalling windows xp steps.

Have your Windows CD.

Have your windows or recovery cd ready.  Go over the steps above if you are still not sure.  You can also call whoever made your computer.

Change the CD to first boot in the system bios.

Every computer manufacturer will have a different key for you to press to get into the system bios.

For most home made computers you can press the delete key.  Watch the computer screen at startup.  It will tell you when you first start your pc what key to press for the bios.

Restart your computer.

After you make changes to the system bios you will need to exit and save changes.  Then reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

When asked hit the enter key to install windows.

Your computer will then reboot and you will be asked if you want to install windows form the CD Rom.

Make sure you hit a key on the keyboard or you will need to reboot the PC again and try.

Follow the rest of the screens until you are finished reinstalling windows xp.

You can also read an article here from Microsoft about installing XP.
