Msconfig Xp.

Msconfig xp is a tool you can use in windows xp for
startup options along with the system INI, win INI and boot INI files.
However, make sure you have some understanding of
this utility before you attempt to use it. There are some things in
here which can render your computer useless if you delete the wrong
things. |
On the startup tab you can see which programs load in
windows system memory. This is what is mostly running in the system
tray.
What these programs do is load in windows memory and can
take up valuable systems resources. Having too may programs in the system
tray can make your computer very slow..
It is best to go through each file on the startup tab one
by one to see which ones you want to keep and which ones you do not.
If you
uncheck something you may have needed the best thing about this utility is,
it will allow you to go back and recheck what you took out after a reboot.
Sometimes when a computer has a virus, the files also can show up
here. You will want to uncheck the file and perform the other usual anti virus
methods.
You can also go under the services tab in msconfig XP to see if there are
other programs lingering in there taking up system resources.
What you want to do is check the
hide Microsoft services tab and this will bring up a list of other programs
running in system memory.
The other tabs are for advanced users and beyond the scope
of this article.
Once you uncheck anything from the startup tab your
computer will go into what is know as selective startup mode.
The next time you
reboot your computer you will get a message telling you the computer is in
selective mode. Just click ok as this is normal and won’t hurt anything.
Remember when taking anything out of the startup tab in
msconfig xp to be careful. DO not just go in there and uncheck everything. If
you do some programs that needed to be loaded into memory may not work.
Also you may find some update programs in there for some of
your software.
If they are for things like your printer then you will want to
keep these loaded in there unless they become a complete nuisance.
If your computer has slowed down and you
suspect a
virus. Try using the msconfig tool first to see if you can take some things out
of memory and speed up your pc.
Also remember to check msconfig xp once in a
while for other programs that get loaded overtime. You may end up wanting
to remove some of these programs because they can take up valuable system
memory.
