The first thing you want to do is make sure your browsers security settings are correct.  If you have internet explorer.  Go to the tools menu bar and select internet options.  From there select the privacy tab.  Make sure your cookie settings are at least set to minimum.

This will help stop bad cookies from being loaded on your computer.  Some of which can be spyware. 

Next select the security tab.  It's the next one over from privacy under the internet options.  next click on the green world at the top for the internet. 

Then go down to the bottom where it says custom level.  Now the first option that you can see once in there is going to be active x controls and plug ins.  Make sure you set this option to prompt. 

You want to know every time a program wants access to your computer.  Active x controls are rampant on the web and are used by a lot of spyware.

When surfing the web do not just accept any active x control from anyone.  Make sure you know where it is coming from before you install it on your computer.
