Hard Drive Problems
|
|
Hard drive problems can be mistaken for a
computer
virus problem. Hard drives are a very sensitive piece of computer
hardware. If your computer is constantly moved from one location to
another it could be affecting your hard drive.
A hard drive can also die slowly over time. First a
computer may reboot once in a while causing someone to think it may be
another problem. Then it will die pretty quickly after months of
going slowly. |
If you hear churning sounds or clicking sounds it’s usually
a pretty good indication that your hard drive is starting to die. This is why
it is important to make sure you back up all of your data, incase you have any
hard drive problems.
Fortunately there is a good program called Spinrite by
Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corporation.
Spinrite is a great little tool
that will help repair your hard drive. This program is best used as a
maintenance program before you have any hard drive problems.
However spinrite has been
known to repair badly damaged hard drives also. This program is highly recommended
to keep your hard drive in shape and fix any bad boot sectors.
You can get
spinrite here.
Common hard drive problems can be a connectivity issue.
This usually results when something is not plugged in correctly and can often be
over looked by even the most experienced technician.
Some common error messages
you will receive will be: drive not found, No fixed disk present and HDD
controller failure. It’s easy to plug a cable in backwards so make sure your
connections are correct if you see any of these hard drive problems.
If you find your computer is having other hard drive problems
then you may also want to run a check disk.
You can do this in windows 2000 and XP by right clicking on the drive and selecting properties and then tools.
Select the check now box and you will have to restart the computer to perform
the operation.
Bad boot sectors.
You may from time to time get
a bad boot sector, which is a corrupt part of the hard drive. You may also get
the: Bad or missing command interpreter.
You will want to make sure the
computer does not have a virus. If there is no virus present then it is
most likely a boot sector is corrupt causing hard drive problems.
If you did not make any back ups of the
boot sector then you will need to reinstall windows.
You could also try the FDISK/MBR
command if you do not have a back up copy.
Hard drives do die, it is a
fact of life. One of the most obvious signs is when you hear load sounds from the
drive.
This is when the motor of the drive has burnt out and you will need to
replace the drive.
If you follow a good solid
plan and have a few things set in place you can prevent hard drive problems and disaster. Some of the
things you will need for this are as follows below.
1.
Have a windows start up disk
2.
Use spinrite
3.
Watch from problems
By having some kind of plan in
place you can prevent disaster and common hard drive problems.
