Disk Defragmenter
|
|
The disk
defragmenter in windows is especially good to use after you have a
virus. A virus can mess up your system and other files and you just may
need to use the disk defragmenter to bring them back to their original
existence.
Usually what happens is over time files become fragmented on the hard
disk. Files that were once together are now worlds apart on a hard
drive.
|
This
fragmentation will cause a disk sub system to perform many more seeks and reads
and writes. This in turn slows down transfer rates of hard disks and causes
hard drives to become sluggish. Hard drives are slow enough as it is. This is
why you will want to use a disk defragmenter.
When you create files, install and uninstall programs
these file are broken up on a disk. Sometimes the clusters are not large enough
to hold the file and therefore fragmentation occurs.
Luckily with windows xp, it has two methods for
defragmenting files on FAT and NTFS systems.
You can use either the disk defragmenter snap in or the command
line defrag tool. Both tools do the same job. However you may choose one over
the other depending on your windows experience.
These tools rearrange files, programs, folders and free
space on a disk. Using this tool can help to optimize your hard disk.
In windows XP, the disk defragmenter was improved
upon from previous version of windows. The tool will now defragment the master
file table and defrag volumes which use any cluster size.
Having trouble with the disk defragmenter?
If you are
having trouble running the disk defragmenter, then you may need to run chkdsk.
Chkdsk is a tool within windows that helps keep your hard drive error free.
If you try to
run the Disk defragmenter and you keep getting the error message “the volume is
dirty”. Then you must run a tool like chkdsk in order to clean the disk before
you proceed.

Tips before using the Disk defragmenter
Before you run the disk defragmenter,
there are a few things you can do in order to use it to its fullest potential.
Below is a list of when to use the
disk defragmenter. Always use the tool after or before you:
-
1.
Uninstall programs from your computer.
-
2.
After you install programs.
-
3.
After you install windows.
-
4.
Delete a large number of files.
You can also use the Disk defragmenter
before you install programs. Doing so will help the files to stay in the same
place on the hard drive, which will help them not to become fragmented right
after you’ve added them.
There are also some files that the
disk defragmenter cannot touch. One of those files is the page file in windows.
The page files holds data which
cannot be stored into memory. In other words when the memory area becomes full,
then the hard drive stores data in the windows page file.
To use the disk defragmenter for the page file you have to
first access the file and then reset it. This is usually better done by someone
with a good level of windows knowledge.
As you can see the disk defragmenter
is a great tool to keep your windows installation running in peak shape.
We would also recommend using this
tool after you run virus or spyware scans.
To use the disk
defragmenter, just go to your start menu in windows and then choose all programs
and then accessories. Next choose system tools and then finally disk
defragmenter.
