Denial of service attack

A denial of service attack is what takes down web pages on the internet.  It is usually done by hackers who have something against a particular website or company.

In the last few years there have been a few of these attacks that made the news.

When a denial of service attack happens a website may appear to not load correctly or it will just not load at all.

This can go on for a few hours or days depending on the situation.  Usually a security loop hole or flaw is to blame.  When the problem is discovered it can then be repaired to normal.

Trojan horse viruses are one of the biggest blames in this type of attack against a website.  Many computers though out the internet are infected with a backdoor trojan horse virus

It is this virus that allows a hacker to take control of this computer with software.  However it does not stop there.

Once hundreds of computers are virus infected, all of these computers can then be controlled to send out hundreds of service requests for whatever website a hacker wants.  This is down through the use of backdoor software.

These infected computers become what are known as zombie computers, without a computer user’s knowledge.

This is another reason why it is very important to understand computer security and keeping your computer free of viruses.  Doing so will help keep the internet community open and safe for all to use.

The denial of service attack has been known to compromise and take down such website of big corporations like Microsoft and Yahoo.

Any corporations running windows internet information services (IIS) should always keep their servers up to date and protected.  Microsoft does offer updates and news directly from their corporate home website.

In the past it has been IIS from a windows server that has caused most of the problems with denial of service attacks.

Steve Gibson of grc.com has also been known to deal with these issues for his website.

He also offers a lot of information about how he dealt with the problem and how he even want in depth into the hacker community to understand how and why these types of attacks happen.

A denial of service attack can also cripple a website to the point where it may need to be re uploaded.
