Once you rule these out you can begin to
look for other things. Stop and try to think if you did
anything to your computer before the problems started
happening. See if the list below jogs your memory.
- Did you add any new software and then
had problems.
- Did you add any new software and then
problems started?
If you did do any of the above and you have
windows XP you may want to try a system restore. Just go back a
few days to a restore point and see if this doesn’t get rid of
the problem.
Also if you did add something new to your
system, then try and remove it. For software just go into the
control panel and choose add/remove software.
For hardware computer troubleshooting, you will have to physically
remove what you added to your computer system.
If none of the above works and you are
still having the same problem, now is when the computer troubleshooting
fun begins.
Basic computer troubleshooting
If your pc will not boot up or load windows
while you are doing computer troubleshooting, then you may have
a hardware problem, when all of the above are ruled out.
When this is the case, you will want to
remove things from the system and then slowly add them back one
by one. This is just simple computer troubleshooting.
What you with this computer troubleshooting is keep only the basic minimum
needed hardware to boot up the computer. Take things out like
your CD Rom and other hardware.
You will obviously need things like your
hard drive and video card to boot.
While computer troubleshooting, if you
remove everything and the computer does reboot correctly then
begin to add some of the hardware you took out and then reboot.
If you add something and then begin to have
the problem again while computer troubleshooting, you now know what is causing the problem.
If you still have problems at this point
and cannot boot the computer up, you will need to have things
like your memory, CPU, power supply, motherboard and other
hardware tested with computer troubleshooting.
Device manager computer
troubleshooting
For windows computers you can also check
the device manager. this is one of the basic computer
troubleshooting steps. In windows XP just click on start,
then my computer.
Right click on my computer and select
properties. Next select hardware and then device manager.
You are looking for any hardware
conflicts. Look to see if any hardware is listed with an
exclamation point next to it.
If it is then you have a problem. Try to
either remove the hardware or see if you can use the help file
to resolve any conflicts.
Computer troubleshooting can be
tedious work. But if you have a plan to follow and rule out common
things first, you will make it an easier process.
