Computer Keeps Rebooting

If your computer keeps rebooting you may have a virus.  Classic signs of this are when your computer just shuts down for no reason what so ever or even keeps restarting.  However this is also a sign of a few other things.

What you need to do is cover things one by one like a checklist to figure out what the problem may be.

Another problem that may be causing a computer to shutdown is a bad power supply.  Power supplies seem to go bad over time and then finally shut down all together.  Your computer may shut off once in a while and seem fine for a longtime and then all of a sudden it will start to shut off and on over and over.

Another problem that a lot of people don’t really know about will cause your computer to restart over and over.  This can happen when dust starts to settle on your cpu.  You will usually find it caked right underneath the cpu fan.  This mostly causes problems with newer computers from around a 1 GHz cpu and above.  The reason this happens is because a newer computer cpu runs very hot and needs to have a good source of clean air all the time.  You should check for fan dust at least once a year.  Most people do not realize how much dust their house has.

Another reason a computer keeps rebooting is other hardware issues.  This could be because of bad memory, bad video card or others.  You will need to check everything one by one to eliminate whatever the problem is.

Remember to make a checklist to start with if you have this problem.  Follow the one below for starters.

  1. Check cpu for dust
  2. Run a virus scan
  3. Check power supply
  4. Check other hardware such as memory

If you can boot into safe mode then you usually have a software issue or maybe even a cpu dust issue.  At this point you will need to ask yourself if you installed any new drivers.  If you have windows XP, you can also try system restore.  However this will not always remove a bad installed driver if your computer keeps rebooting.
