Boot sector virus

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2007

A boot sector virus can make you have to reload your operating system faster than any virus out there.

The first thing you need to understand about this type of virus is prevention

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to this type of virus.

Prevention is backing up your hard drive and using anti virus software that comes with boot protection software.

Almost everyone has been through having to reload windows one time or another.  It sure stinks.  But when you want to remove boot sector virus you are only left with the reload option.

So, the best thing you can do is to back up you data.  Then, when a boot sector virus does infect your system and you have to reload you operating system, you will have all your data.

But first let’s understand what a boot sector virus does to your computer.  A computer goes through a system of reading certain files when it is turned on or booted up.

It checks these files to make sure everything is ok.  Once it finds everything ok it then continues to boot and load the operating system.  In windows there are boot files that are needed to load the operating system.

What a boot sector virus does is infect these files so the computer cannot load the graphical user interface of windows.

Along with a Trojan horse virus a boot sector virus is one of the most deadly viruses you can get on your system.

Please make sure you read our virus prevention section on how to avoid viruses.  Education is always important when dealing with viruses.

what is a computer virus

So now that you know what a boot sector virus does and how you get it.  Let’s talk about the cure more.

Again data backup is very important.  There are various ways to accomplish this.  You can read more about them here.

Another thing you can do is use make sure you use the rescue disk that comes with your antivirus software.

Usually this is a small program you can load on to a floppy disk that will allow you to scan for viruses in the event of disaster.

Most anti virus programs come with the ability to use a rescue disk.  Norton, MacAfee and most other anti virus programs have the ability to do this.

Most people just load their anti virus software and do not use the rescue disk option.  Do not do this.

Make sure you take the time to read about this option.  If you do not understand use the free technical support you get when you buy your anti virus software.

Again when dealing with a boot sector virus you want to prevent it more than anything.
